The Mysterines: British alt-rock rising stars

The Mysterines are a British alt-rock band from Liverpool and the Wirral, England. The band comprises Lia Metcalfe (vocals and guitar), George Favager (bass guitar), Callum Thompson (guitar and backing vocals) and Paul Crilly (drums and backing vocals).

The band’s first release was the four-track Take Control EP in 2019 on their own Pretty Face Recordings label. Besides the title track, the EP consisted of ‘Hormone’, ‘Gasoline’ and ‘Bet YouR Pretty Face’.

The Love’s Not Enough EP, also self-released, followed in 2020. Aside from the title track, the EP offered also ‘Who’s Ur Girl?’ and ‘I Win Every Time’.

The band signed to Fiction Records (famously home of The Cure for many years) in March 2021. They released their debut album, Reeling, produced by Catherine Marks, on March 11, 2022. Singles from the album were ‘Love’s Not Enough”, ‘In My Head’, ‘The Bad ‘Thing’ and ‘Dangerous’. The album was well received. According to the review aggregator site MetacriticReeling received “universal acclaim” with a score of 81 out of 100.

From May to June 2023, The Mysterines supported for the Arctic Monkeys during their UK and Ireland Tour. This included a massive outdoor gig at Arsenal’s football stadium in front of 60,000 fans. The band also supported notable acts The Hives and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes. During this period they also released standalone single ‘Begin Again’.

There was also a dance remix of ‘Begin Again’ by Jordan Nocturne which works well.

In June 2024, the band released their second studio album, Afraid of Tomorrows. It was produced by John Congleton over five weeks in Los Angeles. The album represented the band’s growing confidence and was well-reviewed by critics. Metacritic noted Afraid of Tomorrows “universal acclaim” based on a score of 84 out of 100. Three singles , ‘Stray’, ‘Sink Ya Teeth’ and ‘The Last Dance’, were released from the album.

Meanwhile, ‘Life’s a Bitch (But I Like it So Much)’, this is our fave song by the band:
